Backyard Brawl Comes to a Close

I was recently covering the WVU vs Pitt game for another media outlet when I decided to pull out my new Canon T3i DSLR and get some footage before the kickoff to the final Backyard Brawl. It's not very long but it has a unique vibe to it. Enjoy..

"Reload" Music Video

I recently directed and edited my first music video for Nesler Media Productions. It came out quite well. I would have liked to shoot it on a DSLR but I hadn't purchased one yet (that is no longer the case). Logan Dodd - L.A.D made my job easy. He was is not only musician but is also incredibly talented with acting as well. We have more in the works with L.A.D but for now, enjoy "Reload"

Getting the Ball Rolling Again...

In 2009 I started a feature film about the cycling scene in West Virginia. Long story short, injuries and other issues happened and the film never fully came together at the end. I still have all of the footage and may end up putting together an abbreviated version of my intended film.

Recently, Jesse Borror, who was one of the riders who was to be featured in the original cycling film, Ride WV, won the 2011 Downhill Mountain Bike National Championship. We do a lot of riding and training together so I decided to do a short film on Jesse. This is a tribute it his success that he had this season and I hope that when it's finished, it truly showcases the talents and speed that he possesses.

Here is the brief teaser to the film...

2011 Motown Throwdown Ski & Snowboard Jam

This past Saturday, Pathfinder and Redbull hosted the fifth annual Motown Throwdown rail jam for skiers and snowboarders. The jam is held each year at the south end of High Street. For those who are not familure with Morgantown, W.Va., High Street is the heart of downtown. So much of Morgantown’s beautiful culture, and night life lives on this urban melting pot.

The crew at Pathfinder brought out 40 of the top winter athletes from around this part of the country. Year after year, the riders put on a great show for the crowd but this year may have been the best contest yet. Maybe it was the fact that it was Halloween weekend, the first snow fall greeted everyone or maybe it was the fact that the WVU Mountaineers took a come-from-behind victory over Rutgers University just before the kick off of the finals. Whatever it was is unknown but the crowd was at an all time best this year.

I had the privilege to film the event again this year. I was creating some freelance film work for Red Bull and Oakley. My job was made easy with all of the stellar runs that were being thrown down this Halloween weekend. Although all of the athletes were technically amateurs, it was near impossible for the crowd to tell because everyone was pulling off jaw dropping runs for the $2,000 purse that was up for grabs.
The party didn’t stop with the rail jam, in fact things were just getting started at the commencement of the contest. Red Bull brought out some of their highly skilled hip-hop artists and DJ’s for this year’s event. They put on a crazy show atop the Red Bull Sound Stage. DJ Zimmie was one of the featured musicians, and from the time I stepped out of my truck to the time that I left, he was spinning and mixing some of the best tracks that I have ever had the privilege of hearing. Being and action sports athlete myself, I know the importance of having some proper music to get you in the right mind set, and DJ Zimmie had no problem delivering.

Events like the Motown Throwdown always make for a great time, and always draw an incredible crowd. It would be great to see more events like this in the Morgantown/Pittsburgh area. Action sports are alive and well in this region of the country, and more people need to produce events like this to showcase the talents of these athletes. For the past few years, a select group of athletes and promoters have discussed the possibility of having a BMX/Mountain Bike dirt jump contest on High Street. This event would bring much of the same vibe that the Motown Throwdown does only this would be held in the spring or fall. Who knows, maybe events like this will become more of the public norm within the next few years.

What About Distractions?

Soon after I published my last post about Stewart possibly not racing outdoors, it was confirmed that he would indeed be taking to the motocross circuit this coming summer. This was great news for the fans, and industry as a whole.

I watched all of the press conference video coverage from today and one thing stuck out at me. James kept talking about all of the distractions that kept arising last season, and he was happy that would no longer be the case now that he was with JGR. He went on to mention that next week he would start testing for his possible NASCAR switch that will follow his dirt bike career. That is some exciting news for motorsports fans....

Wait a second... What about not having any more distractions? It seems to me like trying to win multiple championships on his bike while trying to shape into a NASCAR driver would hinder ones concentration of the task at hand.

I personally think the whole dirt bike to car racing deals are ridiculous. We don't see Tour de France riders transitioning into motocross or football players moving into tennis. These professionals hone their skills for years. It makes no sense for someone to get distracted with their current profession, to get a free pass into another. We will see how it all pans out.

James Stewart: Motocross or Not?

Well dirt bike fans, it’s finally happened, James Stewart made the move to the Joe Gibbs Racing squad. They made the official announcement this morning, and it was one that was basically known for the better part of a week. Racer X broke the news early last week that James would most likely be making the move to the JGR tent for 2012, and that’s exactly what happened.

Since JGR opened up their Supercross racing efforts in 2008, they have been making great strides towards success each season. After only three years under their belts, they landed the fastest man on the planet. It’s a good fit in my opinion. The JGR team went from zero to hero rather quickly in the NASCAR world, and they seem to be on the right track to do the same in the dirt bike racing world as well.

You may notice that I have referred to it as the “dirt bike” racing industry twice in this article, and with good reason. There are quite a few questions that are still going unanswered with this whole JGR/Stewart deal. The number one thing that myself, and many others are wondering is, is James going to ever race outdoors (motocross) again? Nowhere in this press release did they give the indication that he would or would not but they did talk heavily on surpassing Jeremy McGrath’s 72 supercross win record, and how they wanted to become one of the top teams in supercross… Maybe this is due to the fact that the supercross season is only a few months away but again, nothing said for sure what their plans were.

It’s going to be a major disappointment if we have to sit through another outdoor season without “The Fastest Man on the Planet” gracing us with his presence. I would be disappointed in JGR if they signed him to a deal that only included one aspect of dirt bike racing. What if they started signing their NASCAR drives to only part of the Nationwide Cup Series?
